Limitless Ways to Meditate

I enjoy entertaining, but I also need a lot of alone time. My alone time is like a battery charge for when I entertain. Once that party is over I go right back to my alone time to recharge! Meditation can refer to doing an activity alone, but you can meditate with other people around as well. One such way I have found to meditate is when I am decorating before a party, namely when I’m setting the table.

It’s like being in a meditative trance. There is a melodic rhythm to setting the table. I strive to ensure every person is included. I try to make certain that each person has enough room. I also enjoy when each plate, fork, knife, wine glass, and napkin are placed just right. It may sound silly or not important, but I can’t think of a more welcoming gesture than a beautifully-set table. It creates a safe—almost magical space—for others to relax and enjoy the company, the good food (I hope) and a good glass of wine.

What I also try to include in my table setting is an earthly element. It could be fresh flowers or real candles (the fake ones achieve that feeling as well, although I do prefer a real flame).

All this to say that meditation can come in many forms. It’s about finding what truly slows your heart down and what elevates your mood. Sitting quietly and breathing in and out for some people is not relaxing, so many give up and just say they can’t meditate. If we broaden the definition to include unconventional activities we would be amazed at the many different forms of meditation in our lives.

I still enjoy the traditional form of meditation. I like sitting—or lying down—in a rather dark room and concentrate on my breathing, but I refuse to limit myself! There are endless ways to find pure joy and a sense of internal peace.

What are some ways you find solace for a few moments throughout your day? A walk, listening to music, drawing, reading, looking out the window, playing an instrument, baking, shooting hoops on the basketball court? Think outside the box when it comes to meditation. Be limitless, but purposeful in your actions. Recognize how what you are doing is affecting your breathing, your heart rate, and ultimately your overall mood. Find what brings you the utmost joy and relaxation.
