Demo Day Baby!

I sang it out loud and repeatedly that morning, “Demo Day Baby!” until my son begged me to stop and cursed me out (respectfully) for putting that song in his head. We have begun to completely renovate the laundry room and powder room (or guest washroom, the name ‘powder room’ seems so dated). Months of planning and sourcing everything out with my friend/designer and finally things seem to be coming to life…or tearing apart in order to come back anew.

I was beyond excited that morning. I love remodelling. It’s an expensive vice to have so it’s not like we do it often, but I like having even a small home project always on the horizon. Demolition day got me thinking (I know, again?!). Spring is in full swing, even if the weather is not exactly cooperating. It feels good to tear up old ways of doing things and create new ways to better use the same square footage (no walls are coming down). Just like spring, sometimes we have to unearth and get down and dirty in order to bring new life back into our lives.

Similar to a renovation, we too should take stock of old habits that just don’t seem to work anymore. Comfort and familiarity can be a crutch we use to stay stuck in our ways. However, once we accept the idea that new can be better—and potentially revive us in ways we never expected—then we can find the strength to push past all that is holding us back.

Change can seem ugly at times. Nothing looks familiar and all can feel strange. Consequently, fear can start to awaken inside. However, fear is our greatest enemy when change is knocking (or banging loudly!) at our doorstep. Settle down the fear by telling yourself that nothing ever stays the same—even if the days seem to blend into one another.

Each day is different, therefore you are different. You are not the same person you once were, and that goes for everyone around you. Take on a new task or develop a new goal and just go for it! Hey, if change is inevitable, then you might as well make it interesting, no?

So don’t be afraid of ‘Demo Day’. It may never be, look, or feel the same way again, but oh baby it’s going to be so fabulous in the end!
