There are small pleasures in this world that I secretly adore. Well, not so secret anymore because I’m about to share them with you. I’ll start with the simple pleasure of washing my face in the morning as the natural light streams through. Oh, I know I’ve mentioned this before but I need to describe my little corner that fills my heart with joy (see pictures below). Nothing fancy, just a well placed plant given to me by one of my dearest friends and former coworker. A beautiful original art piece made by the same friend—and of course my dog Luna enjoying the sound of the running water and my voice as I sing aloud to Madonna’s ‘Like A Prayer’ (ok, more like she tolerates my annoying screeches).

If makeup is called for that day then my music suddenly becomes louder, and the counter gets covered with all things that helps this 43 year old woman look a little more ‘fresh’. These simple pleasures help me stay in the moment and not always feel like I have to play sergeant in my own home by yelling at my son to brush his teeth, or asking my daughter if she remembered to put deodorant on after her shower. These are the ‘relish the moment’ moments that you read about in all the self-help articles. I hear you loud and clear!
No, it’s certainly not always easy to stay in the moment and it’s certainly not easy to stay positive and loving when your mind races through all the things that need to get done—while your kids move like molasses as they get ready. Unfortunately, I’d have to admit that these positive stay-in-the-moment mornings are more of an exception than the norm—but I’m trying! When they do occur I’m happy to acknowledge them and be thankful.
So, I would suggest to find your ‘makeup & Zen’ moments throughout your day. It may not be easy—or practical—but if you do slow down for just a few moments each day you can find them in those simple pleasures that make you smile. It may be something that is unique to you like enjoying the smell of your favourite shampoo, or loving the way your hair falls on a given day—anything that helps you feel peaceful, content, or connected to your true you—if even for just a moment.
