Book Review: MY SON AND THE AFTERLIFE by Elisa Medhus, MD (and) MY LIFE AFTER DEATH by Erik Medhus

After my last blog about Halloween, namely spirits that have crossed over, I felt it fitting to follow it up with two fantastic books about love, loss, bereavement, spiritual reawakening and connecting to loved ones on the other side. I’m a little intimidated and humbled to shine a spotlight on these two books because the personal spiritual journey they took me on—and still going through—is so profound I am fearful I won’t do them justice with a single blog. That being said, I will try my best to review these books without trivializing it’s message or simplifying it for the sake of entertainment.

Let me start off by saying that these books do not address or endorse any specific religion. It’s not at all about any singular belief system. Instead, it’s about what happens to our souls after our human bodies have deceased and how the soul—which is made of energy—lives on and oftentimes tries to communicate with it’s loved ones on the earthly plane.

I was first introduced to the Channeling Erik blog by one of my own astute blog readers, who intuitively thought I would be interested in reading about Erik and his life while here on earth, as well as his life and work as a soul being (I am forever grateful to her for reaching out!). Erik is a young man who came from a large loving family, who lived his short life in the United States. He was close to his mother, who is a successful medical professional and author of parenting books. As a teenager, Erik developed bi-polar disorder and struggled to find balance and peace in his life, despite the many resources he had access to, and even despite the love and attention he received from his family and some caring friends. Erik tragically ended his own life at the age of 20.

His mother, Elisa Medhus—who was a self-proclaimed atheist and raised by atheist parents—found herself in a tailspin of bereavement and anguish. Ultimately, her questions as to where her son could possibly be led her to a spiritual journey that enlightened her and made her a believer of not only the possibility of a spiritual life after death, but the ability to speak to her son via mediumship.

You don’t have to be a believer of reincarnation, God, heaven or the ability to communicate with those who have crossed over. All I can say is just leave a window open for the possibilities, if you are certain you want to keep the door shut on this subject. I am not here to neither change your mind or prove anyone wrong. I think if you are open minded enough to entertain the idea of an afterlife then I would recommend reading these books.

MY SON AND THE AFTERLIFE reads more like a transcript with Elisa asking her son questions through the help of a very sensitive and talented medium, Jamie Butler, commonly referred to in the book as Erik’s spirit translator. Elisa, who is a naturally inquisitive and detail oriented person, asks her son for a very detailed account of not only his physical death on earth, but about his transition into a spirit being and all that it entails. Erik’s personality as it was on earth continues to shine through even in the afterlife, as he uses colourful language and blunt but honest ways to answer his mother’s bountiful questions. Reading these conversations made me laugh many times as the banter between mother and son clearly shows their love and respect for one another. Of course, there was plenty that made me cry, but surprisingly I did not find it sad or depressing as some people might initially believe. It left me wanting to read more. Thankfully there was a follow-up book!

MY LIFE AFTER DEATH gives credit to the author, Erik himself! You must be wondering ‘how could a dead guy write a book?’. Well voila’! It has been done! Through the help of his spirit translator, this book is written in the first person from beginning to end and what you will learn about heaven, or the afterlife (or whatever name you choose to call it by) will simply blow your mind. The love he describes in heaven (that’s what I choose to call it) made me weak at the knees and weep silently as I devoured each word and prayed the book would never end. Akin to the afterlife! Erik describes how he travels as a spirit being and how time is not linear like it is here on earth. He describes how he spends his ‘days’ and the work he does as a spirit guide. I think these concepts might be difficult for some of you to grasp, but to be perfectly honest there is nothing he said that I didn’t always believe to be true deep down from when I was a little girl, despite my Roman Catholic upbringing. I really can’t explain how I could have these beliefs as a child, call it an understanding on a soul level. Remember, I don’t believe in coincidences. However, the details he provides made me reflect on those that I have loved here on earth but who have since crossed over. It made me feel closer to them somehow and maybe even—I dare say—miss them a little less because I got validation that they are but a thought away.

I really could talk about these two books forever, so I’ll try to wrap it up in a neat bow right about here. If you are currently going through a deep bereavement stage in your life, curious about the afterlife, or any stage in between (meaning going through life just one day at a time like the rest of us) then I would suggest reading these two fantastic books. I hope they take you on a moving journey as they did for me. I shall never see this earthly plane quite the same way again, thanks Erik!

  1. I’ve seen Elisa and Erik’s spirit guide on YouTube and I can’t look away. So much to discuss here but if anything the videos brought me closer to God.
