Unhaunted

The light flicks on

They make their presence known

The television blares in the darkened silence after the humans have gone to sleep

They make their presence known

The chairs scuffle across the floor creating a booming chaotic sound

They make their presence known

The bedroom door creeps open in the early morning darkness as the dog growls at attention

They make their presence known

A crowded guided tour, sudden chills and drastic temperature change from one room to the next, unbeknownst to anyone else

They make their presence known

The mind tries to rationalize

Analyze

Categorize

It’s an emotional high

Emotional ties to the unknown

The mind is blown

Feeling alone

They continue to make their presence known

Yes, this is the Halloween edition of TAFF! This poem didn’t require me to use my imagination in order to drum up dramatic effect—I personally experienced each scenario. Actually, the time when my bedroom door opened on its own causing my dog to growl in the early morning happened just this week! She has not growled at anyone behind my bedroom door since she was a puppy. At that time, she was getting used to the routine and didn’t recognize my son walking into my bedroom in the dark. Although it may seem scary to some, these experiences comfort me. I may be initially spooked or confused, questioning whether it really happened—but ultimately I always end up accepting and embracing it for what it is—an encounter with those who have crossed over. They are benevolent experiences that remind me that loved ones are not far away. Our human eyes cannot see but our spirits feel and sense them in many ways…sometimes in more dramatic ways than necessary!

I hope you enjoy celebrating Halloween this week. Feel free to share your stories of unexplained encounters below. Email me if this is not your preferred forum (as many of you always do!) or find me on social media via my name or TAFF.

I love hearing from you all!

Happy Halloween 🎃
