Book Review: VIOLET SKY Forbidden Love by Eve Marian

Years ago, Eve called me up one day and insisted that I read this new romance novel. I had told her in the past that I wasn’t a big fan of reading that genre but she was persistent. She said it wasn’t like any other romance novel. That book turned out to be Twilight. I not only loved reading Twilight but I ended up reading the series. Fast forward to less than a year ago, Eve called me up again (not for the first time, we had heard from each other many times since) with the news that she was writing a novel. She told me that she was inspired by the Twilight series and asked if I would be her alpha reader, which loosely means a first-step editor. I was delighted and a little apprehensive. Again, I reiterated that I was not her target audience and that romance novels were not my forte, however I enjoy the writing process so I find editing fun, therefore I agreed.

Eve Marian was right again. I did enjoy VIOLET SKY Forbidden Love and not just because she had asked me to edit it. Hunter and Michaela—the main characters—have a chance meeting at a Hugo Boss TIFF (Toronto International Film Festival) after party. It is at this party that Hunter sees Michaela for the first time:

“Her smile radiated through the room. It was genuine and stood out among the fake ones…Her unabashed joy cracked a piece of my armour. I’d built it over the decades, fortifying myself from getting too close to any human.”

Hunter is from New York City and Michaela is from Toronto. This chance meeting is not lost on either character when they run into each other again in New York, that is when the story really takes off. A series of unfortunate events leads Michaela and Hunter on a quest to discover not only the truth about Hunter’s father, but also about Michaela’s extraordinary family history.

My favourite part is when the story takes Michaela and Hunter to Italy (no surprise there, I love Italy!). There, she discovers pieces of her past that are shocking which creates a turn of unexpected events. However, a mandatory beach scene in the Mediterranean Sea overtook my senses and brought me back in time…

“I kissed him hard and squeezed every inch of my body against his. The salty ocean clung to his lips. I stood in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea, kissing the most beautiful man I’d ever met…I sighed and looked up at the sun setting low on the horizon. I didn’t know why sunsets made me sad; maybe because they felt like an ending instead of a beginning. I glared at the sun, warning it with my eyes that this was only the beginning. I wouldn’t let what Hunter and I felt for each other come to an end.”

Of course I won’t tell you how the story ends, but I can tell you that the story does not end indefinitely with this book. There is a part two which is coming out this Friday September 17th! So if you want to catch up on some fun fantasy reading I suggest you grab this book now from Amazon so you will be all caught up and eager to read the second book.
